Holden was never happier than he was to know that the weekend had finally approached at last. He got up that morning in the best mood he had been all week and quickly got ready for the day. At the moment he didn’t have anything planned but he dressed and grabbed a few of his things before heading out to the courtyard. The sky was overcast but it didn't looked, or smell, like it was going to rain. He walked around the couryard a few times before picking himself a bench.
It was nearer to the school and was the only one that wasn't covered in leaves or old food. He set his bag next to him and dug through it. Holden always liked to come out to the couryard on the weekends. He always spent the first part of his Saturday doing the homework he collected from his classes. If he did that he knew he'd be able to have the rest of the week to play. He grabbed a hard book then the few papers. It took him a few times to locate a pencil but he finally did.
The first paper in front of him was math, he always tried to it first as it took him the most time. He also disliked it greatly and found it best to get it out of the way. As he was working he thought he heard the sound of distant thunder. He looked up at the sky looked a bit more threatening. If it did rain he hoped it would give him fair warning. He really didn't need his homework getting wet. That was about as good an excuse to the teachers as 'the dog ate it.'
He did love thunderstorms though and would very much like it to rain. Especially when it was always accompanied by lightning and thunder here.

Jessie walked out to the courtyard, her jacket wrapped around her body tightly. She had cut holes in the sleeve a year or so ago so she could slip her fingers through them, and still have use of her hands. Currently, her hands were residing in the pockets of her jacket. She glanced up at the sky, feeling a light breeze bush some bright red locks out of her face.
It certainly looked like it was going to rain, just didn't smell like it. Sighing gently, Jessie lowered her head. She really hoped it wouldn't rain or anything. She was scared of thunderstorms. The thunder always made her jump, and the lightning well that was scary on its own. Plus, it didn't help that she was home alone a lot when she was younger during storms.
Sighing again, Jessie walked over to a nearby bench, shoving leaves off of a small portion of it. She sat down and brought her legs up to her chest, finding it odd that she could fit on the bench like that. She laid her head down on her knees, staring down at the ground as she prayed for it not to storm.

Holden suddenly got a smell of rain in the air and felt a smile grace his mouth. He looked up but still couldn't see the rain just yet. Deciding it would be a good idea he packed up his things. If the rain did come at least his papers would be safe. There was no way the rain would leak through into his bag. He stood up and decided to take a walk around the courtyard.
After slinging his bag over his shoulder he stood and walk around the courtyard. A beautiful flash of lighning blazed off in the distance and he hoped it moved this way. He had always enjoyed watching the storm come in. As he came upon a bench he saw someone sitting on it. They're face was in their knees so he couldn't get a good look at them.
"Beautiful isn't it?" he asked, referring to the storm.

Jessie looked up, hearing a voice. "Oh simply beautiful" she said sarcastically, seeing who it was that was talking to her. It was stupid to continue on with this ridiculous fight that their parents were doing but she couldn't help but be mean to Holden as well. It probably had something to do with the fact that she was starting to get feelings for him, and she didn't want those feelings to show.
She looked up at the sky, seeing the storm. She flinched and lowered her head, pulling her hood over her head and keeping her gaze on the ground. Maybe it'll just pass over us she thought.

Holden could tell there was a note of sarcasm in the person's speech. He figured maybe they didn't appreciate the beauty of storms like he did. When he turned around and looked a bit longer he suddenly recognized who the person was. Jessie Bannon. Great, he had talked to Jessie Bannon, not really something he'd want anyone to know. There really wasn't talking between them. There was fighting and that was nothing at all like talking.
"Oh, it's you," Holden said coldy, and heard a rumble of thunder pass overhead. It softened the harsh lines in his face as he looked at Jessie. He couldn't stay mad, not during a thunderstorm.

She looked over at him, rolling her eyes. "Yes its me" she said sarcastically, turning her head. She stiffened more as the thunder rumbled over head. She couldn't stop herself as she flinched from the noise. She raised her head again, looking up at him as he seemed to soften some due to the storm.
She looked up at the sky again, flinching once more. "Why do you like storms so much?" she asked, lowering her head and covering her face with her hands.

Holden smiled and looked up at the sky once more. "If you just stop and think about it, storms are kind of like magic," Holden said. "That water can fall from the sky, that lightning and thunder can even exist. Then when the rain is falling it's so clean and fresh and when it's over it leave everything else feeling the same."
Holden smiled again and pulled the straps up higher on his shoulders. "As I said, it's a beautiful thing," said Holden.

She jumped once more as the lightning flashed and the thunder rumbled. "Beautiful" she said sarcastically, looking at him through her fingers over her face. She really didn't like storms, and this one wasn't helping her much.
"I-I think I'm going to go inside" she stuttered, standing up from the bench. She went to walk around him but ended up tripping on her own feet and crashing against him. "Sorry" she said looking down.

"It's been to watch it coming in," Holden said, ignoring her sarcasm. "That's when it looks....amazing."
He turned away from Jessie and looked back up the sky. It looked like it might just be coming in here soon. At least the thunder and lightning seemed to say as much. He then felt something solid fall into him and out of instinct caught it. When he turned he saw it was Jessie and he released her. "That's okay, you don't like storms," Holden said, shrugging. "Figures you might be a little disoriented."

She looked up at him, sighing gently. "I've never liked storms actually" she said softly, hating to tell anyone about her problem like that. She always thought it would make her sound weak or even pathetic. After all, not many people were scared of storms like her.
Looking up at the sky instead, Jessie flinched again as the thunder rumbled. She shrieked lightly, not even noticing as she threw her arms around him, hiding her face against his chest.

"It's a rational fear," Holden said, he knew a lot of people were afraid of thunderstorms. His mom included. "I know someone who is afraid of thunderstorms."
Holden wondered if he'd be this nice to Jessie if there wasn't a thunderstorm. He was always happy when there was a thunderstorm and nothing made him angry. Holden was shocked when Jessie threw her arms around him but knew the loud thunder had spurred her to do it. He used a hand to pat her on the back, he'd done this quite a few times with his mom.

She whimpered silently as the lightning flashed, turning her head so she could look up at him. "Who, besides me of course?" she asked, laying her head against his chest. She realized what she was doing, how she was acting now but she didn't pull back. She knew she should, she knew her parents wouldn't want her like this, but she was much too scared of the storm to even really move or anything.
As the thunder rumbled once more, Jessie turned her head, hiding her face again. This was really starting to get annoying for her.

"My mom, she's deathly afraid of storms," Holden said shaking his head. "The woman can run into a burning building but storms, that's a whole different story."
Holden felt Jessie quiver slightly as another flash of lightning came down from the sky. He continued to comfort her; he knew it would help, slightly.

She glanced up at him, remembering part of the reason that their families were fighting so much. The fire. The fire that her grandmother had been killed in. Apparently, her parents had believed that the Millers were the cause of it, and that just fueled the fighting between their families more. It was ridiculous honestly, but there wasn't anything they could do about it.
As the thunder rumbled again, Jessie jumped and tightened her grip around him, feeling rain coming down on them soon after.

Holden felt Jessie's grip on him tigthened and he wondered if he should take her inside. When the rain began to fall he saw the lightning was growing closer. It would probably be safer for both of them to find cover. He looked around and spotted one of the awnings covering up a baseball dugout.
"Come on, lets get out of the rain," Holden said, and pointed over to the dugout.
